Digging deeper into grace (12/28/2016)

Some parting thoughts on Christmas: Christians believe that Christmas is about God coming into our world as one of us.  Christians also believe that God is love (1 John 4:8).  That means that when Christians celebrate Christmas we are celebrating love coming into our world in human form!  Indeed, Jesus’ life gave evidence of God’s love on earth.

Now that Christmas is over, what should be our response?

Christmas should not be forgotten for a year.  Rather the truth of what we celebrated at Christmas should be lived out throughout the year.

If a Christian is, by definition, a follower of Christ, then a Christian ought to be one who makes it his/her aim to live like Jesus, giving evidence of God’s love on earth.

Howard Thurman expresses well how we should respond to Christmas:

When the song of the angels is silent

When the star in the sky is gone

When the kings and princes are home

When the shepherds are again tending their sheep

When the manger is darkened and still

The work of Christmas begins…

To find the lost

To heal the broken

To feed the hungry

To rebuild the nations

To bring peace among people

To befriend the lonely

To release the prisoner

To make music in the heart

Since the message of Christmas is that God has sent His love into our world in the person of Jesus, and since Christians believe that He is still with us always, then our response to Christmas must be that we continue to spread His love around.

Henri Nouwen puts this into perspective: “Your love, insofar as it is from God, is permanent.  You can claim the permanence of your love as a gift from God.  And you can give that permanent love to others.”

Christmas was not merely a day to receive gifts and then forget about it till next year.  Christmas—God’s love among us—is something we should live out throughout the year by continuing to extend God’s love to others.
