Calling not your calling? Event will have something for everyone

More than just the California State Championship Duck Calling Contest, the extravaganza on Aug. 27-28 at Veterans Memorial Park will have something to offer for just about everyone, according to Pat Kittle, owner of Kittle’s Outdoor and Sport.

“We really want to integrate the women and young people,” Kittle said.

There are numerous seminars and demos scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, including one geared toward adults and kids alike, by Louisiana’s own Kelly Haydel (Vice President of Haydel’s Game Calls).

“It’s an educational type seminar that will be taking place on Saturday at noon,” Kittle said. “He has his own kind of schtick and goes through basic calling and different types of calls. He really wants to get kids involved, get them up on the stage to do some activities during the 45 minutes he has.”

Outside the realm of hunting and calling, kids will also have the opportunity to jump around in a bounce house at the park and get their faces painted.

Kittle said he was hoping to bring in a new generation of young women to the calling world by once again putting Redding, CA native Maddie Nightingale (mouth-caller extraordinaire) on the stage.

“With Maddie, she’s really honed her skills in mouth calling, and brought on new species in her repertoire,” Kittle said. “We’ll have her give a demo, and have her on our panel on Sunday.”

The panel, a new feature this year, is something Kittle is excited to put together.

“I want to put together a panel on Sunday at noon for the public, consisting of a number of figures, ranging from local duck hunters and waterfowl enthusiasts to champion meat and main street callers,” Kittle said. “We’re just looking to educate the public based on what they want to know. The crowd is going to dictate the conversation by bringing up the questions that they want to hear about.”

For the adults planning on attending, the California Decoy Carving Association and a few vintage hunting collectors will have collections to peruse throughout the weekend. On Saturday night, there is a California Waterfowl Association Fundraising Dinner on Saturday evening.

“They’ve got some great entertainment lined up,” Kittle said.
