Overcoming a slow start at home, the Williams Yellowjackets went head to head with the University Prep Panthers last Friday night and walked off of McCarl Field with a 28-18 victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, the ‘Jackets struck in the second.

Williams running back Juan Fernandez blazed by U-Prep’s defensive line late in the period for a touchdown. A hand- off to Julius Fisher for a two point conversion would  put Williams ahead 8-0. U-Prep, determined to not be shut out, answered back with the touchdown but was denied on a two point conversion, which left the score 8-6 at the half.

“We have so many young players and we start off very nervous and uptight,” assistant coach Armando Bautista said.

In the second half, the ‘Jackets lit up the field and left their nerves on the sidelines. Running back Julius Fisher was a regular visitor to the end-zone in the final two quarters, with two touchdowns in the third and one late in the fourth.

With close 21-18 score at the start of the final quarter, the Yellowjackets offense hustled down the field for a score and sealed their 28-18 victory over U-Prep.

Fisher led the way in the Yellowjackets’ victory, finishing with 24 carries for 189 yards and a crucial strip-sack of U-Prep quarterback Justice Dean.

Tony Mena had a solid defensive game with 2 sacks for a loss of 9 yards,  while Jorge Rodriguez chipped in 14 tackles.

The Williams Yellowjackets football team has a home non-conference game against rival school Pierce on Friday, September 9 at 5:30 PM.
