Pierce volleyball drops first match to Woodland

img_2843Even when they’re down, they aren’t out: the Pierce Bears varsity volleyball team proved that again last week in their match against the Woodland Wolves on Thursday, Sept. 8.

The Bears were down early to the Wolves, who emerged from a tightly contested first and second set to jump out to an early two set lead: 25-20, 25-22. As they did in their game against Pioneer (another Woodland school), the Bears battled back to force a deciding fifth set, taking sets three and four 25-12 and 25-23, respectively.

Unlike their match against Pioneer, however, Pierce’s varsity volleyball squad fell just short in the final set, 16-14.

“This was a battle of a match,” Bears coach Kim Travis said. “We once again were down 2-0, battled back, but fell short. I feel (that) though it’s not fun losing, we can always learn something valuable from a loss, and we definitely took away a few lessons from this match. I’m extremely happy with my team’s drive to not give up.”

Travis credited Lexi Erickson with playing good defense and adjusting to the Wolves’ right side attacker. Erickson finished the match with 23 serve receptions and 9 digs.

Setter Lauren Ornbaun once again led the way in assists with 48. Outside hitter Emily Kuykendall racked up 22 kills to lead the Bears in that statistical category. Cora Cherry added 15 digs, 4 blocks, and 8 kills; and Ellie Geyer had 20 digs.

Pierce’s junior varsity volleyball team won their match against the Wolves in two sets, 25-18, 25-15

The Pierce Bears varsity volleyball team made it five straight wins to open their season by defeating the Dixon 3-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 25-23, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19.

Bears coach Kim Travis said that her team benefited from a stellar performance by Callie Muniz, who posted 8 kills, had a .412 hit percentage, and went 92 percent from the service line. Cherry led the Bears in kills (14), and was followed closely by Kuykendall (12). Ornbaun dished out 38 assists against the Rams, while Geyer had 23 serve receptions and 9 digs.

Pierce’s junior varsity squad defeated Dixon in two sets, 25-20, 25-12.
