Four-way stop planned for tricky Williams intersection

Following a vote by the city council at last week’s meeting, a four-way stop sign will be installed at the intersection of Vann Street and E. Street on the east side of Williams.

The council voted unanimously to approve the installation of two stop signs for east- and westbound E Street traffic at the intersection. The project will also include pavement repairs, roadway striping, and installation of high-visibility crosswalks. It will cost the city about $200,000.

City Administrator Frank Kennedy said that the project will be funded using the balance of the $900,000 the city loaned itself for street pavement repairs earlier this year.

Kennedy said that the bid on the initial pavement repair project, for which the money was initially earmarked, came in well under budget, opening up the $200,000 for the work on the Vann Street and E Street intersection.

“I like the idea that this is going to look good, and not going to bounce you around when you come to Williams, because this enhances our appearance, and our ability to draw people in,” Councilmember John Troughton, Jr. said.

Trin Campos, Williams’ city engineer, said that traffic volume alone wasn’t enough to warrant a stop sign at the intersection, but added that a number of safety factors came into play as the east side of town continues to become more urbanized with new commercial and residential development.

Campos proposed two more locations for the installation of four-way stop signs, both of which were on Seventh Street. The work on those two intersections would have cost the city $40,000 apiece. The council asked Campos to bring back more information on those two intersections at a later date.
