On Sunday, Feb. 5, four local County students attended their first Jackpot show in Red Bluff at the California Connection. Hosted by Ashley Jacobson from Orland, this was a first time for the Jack pot at the Tehama County Fairgrounds.

“There’s always going to be kinks to be worked out, but I had fun. I think the kids had a good time,” said Jacobson

Hannah Azevedo from Maxwell, Aubrianna Keeler and Kenzie Wilson from Stonyford, and Mary-Pat Peterson all gave their showmanship skills a shot in the ring for their first jackpot experience.

Similar to our County fair, participants registered for different parts of the event. Entries offered were showmanship, market class, and breeding, all of which were species specific, lambs. Despite the chill and wind, approximately 30 kids aged 10-19 from all over the state brought their A game to the arena. The event kicked off with a Pee-Wee showmanship division followed by the 9-11, 12-15, and 16 and up divisions.

Both Keeler and Wilson participated in the 12-15 division along with 10 other participants.

“It was a great experience seeing people from all over coming to compete with their lambs. It was cool to see how everyone shows in a different style. It was a great way to learn new things and I would definitely recommend going to one if you want to learn more,” said Keeler

Azevedo, who competed in the 16-19 division placing second in her class, sending her to the final showmanship drive where she placed fourth overall.

“With this being my first competition outside of the Colusa County Fair, I didn’t really know what to expect. There were some tough competitors in my class who spend all year attending jackpots such as this one. Being able to compete with them and earn a spot in the final showmanship drive has boosted my confidence and also has helped prepare me for our County fair. I highly recommend attending a jackpot,” said Azevedo.
