Sold-out Crab Feed a success

In the decade John Ascencion has helped organize the biggest fundraiser of the year for Our Lady of Lourdes School, he’s never seen as big a turnout as last Friday.

It was perhaps fitting that the sold-out Crab Feed and auction helped culminate Ascencion’s last year as co-chairman.

“We served over 300 (people),” Ascencion said.

The event has been held since 2006 to raise money to support the Catholic School, a private educational ministry for children in grades kindergarten thought eighth.

The school emphasizes Catholic Christian principals while providing quality education, students said at Friday’s event.

“I really like it,” said Lily Woodring, 13, a student in her final year at Our Lady of Lourdes. “It’s very different from public school. The faith part of it is very comforting.”

Woodring is one of 12 eighth grade students who will graduate from Our Lady of Lourdes this year.

Of them, 10 have been together since they started kindergarten, she said.

Woodring added the school has provided her with a great education.

The school has allowed her to grow spiritually and has kept exposure to outside negative influences to a minimum, she said.

Lily’s father, Chad Woodring, co-chairs the annual Crab Feed with John and Gloria Ascencion, who for the past six years has cooked the enchiladas, which have become very popular with the regulars who attend the dinner each year.

John Ascencion, who thanked all the local sponsors who helped make the Crab Feed so successful, said all the proceeds from the event will go toward operating expenses for the school. “This is my last year as a school parent at Our Lady of Lourdes School,” Ascencion said. “It has been a great run, but my time here at OLL is almost over. I will continue to help with the event in the future, but not in the capacity of a chair.”

Our Lady of Lourdes School is currently enrolling new students.

To set up Kindergarten evaluations, visit the school, or meet with Principal Barbara Genera, call the school office at 458-8208.

Genera has been principal of Our Lady of Lourdes School since 1987.
