Williams Community Center holds youth art show

Jasmin Rodriguez, Jackie Rivera, Rafael Serrano, and Mireya Ocampo.

Celebrating national Youth Art Month, the Williams Community Center showcased student artwork in a variety of media Saturday. Area art teachers selected some of the most Representative pieces, which featured students in grades 7-12. Just over a dozen attended the show.

Schools represented this year included Maxwell, Colusa, and Williams.

“We have many talented young individuals in our county,” said Judy Busath, event organizer.

Each of the entries we’re judged by Christina May of Marysville. May is the owner and instructor of “The Beauty of Paint” in Yuba City and provided critiques for the artists.

Cash awards were given to top awardees totaling over $200.

Rafael Serrano, a Colusa High School Senior took second place at the art show.

“I do a lot art in pinks and blues,” said Serrano. “I wanted to convey movement in my piece.”

Serrano commented that his inspiration came from a photo he had.

“My friends ask if the photo is an expressionist of J.F.K.,” Serrano quipped.

Colusa High School Art Teacher, Jonathan Ford, said that he had about 10 students participate in the event.

Mireya Ocampo, of Maxwell, placed first and best of show.

“My first place piece is the Illuminati-inspired drawing,” said Ocampo. “The best of show is a homework assignment that we had to do on our favorite thing. I choose Marilyn Monroe.”

Jasmin Rodriguez, of Williams, placed third with her pineapple drawing and word artwork. “I chose the pineapple because Piña is a family name which means Pineapple,” she said.

Jackie Rivera, of Williams, placed first for her Beyonce pencil drawing, and Luis Araujo, of Williams, placed second with his photograph.
