Colusa arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals for allegedly killing grandparents’ dog

A 20-year-old Colusa man was arrested on Sunday after he allegedly bludgeoned his grandparents 10-pound dog to death with a shovel and buried it in a hole in the back yard of a Colusa residence.

Armando Cuauhtemoc Mendoza, 20, of Colusa, was arrested on April 2 at 12:52 p.m., at his residence on the 200-block of Allen Circle on suspicion of felony cruelty to animals. Colusa Police Sgt. Eldon Tamez said that a neighbor was in a back yard adjacent to Mendoza’s residence and heard a dog barking, which caused him to look over the fence into Mendoza’s yard. The neighbor witnessed Mendoza beating the dog to death with a shovel before calling the authorities.

“The gist is that the kid was in the back yard of the house, and the dog went and nipped at his shin, near his ankle, and threw the kid into a rage. He ended up grabbing the shovel and started hitting it over the head. He knocked it out and ultimately killed it. The kid, to hide it, dug a hole and buried the dog in the hole,” said Luis Ruiz, the officer who responded to the scene and conducted the investigation. “I went over and contacted him, and the kid owned up to everything. He took me out to the back yard and showed me where it was, admitted to killing the dog, so I placed him under arrest for animal cruelty.”

Ruiz described the dog, which was dug up and taken to animal control, as a 10-pound, terrier-type mix.

“He killed the dog out of anger, is what it was. If he would have killed it out of fear, that’s one thing, but he himself said that he did it out of anger,” Ruiz said. ■
