Maxwell Cemetery fence to be repainted

The fence around the Maxwell Cemetery is getting a fresh new look.

The Board of Directors selected H&R Quality Painting to repaint the wrought iron structure that took many years to build, thanks to donations from the community.

Work on the fence started in early May, and much had been cleaned and painted by Memorial Day, said Director Maria Carrancho.

“We were starting to find a lot of wear and tear, and rust in a number of spots,” Carrancho said.

The Maxwell Cemetery fence project was started in 2001 when Olivia Baber took up a collection to build brick pillars on the Sutton Road gate. Joyce Wells and Amy Reis followed by collecting funds for the main entry gates off Sutton Road.

After establishing a Memorial Fund for donations made in memory of deceased love ones, the Board collected enough money over the years to buy fencing materials, with volunteers installing the fence in phases.

“All funds received were applied to the fence project,” Carrancho said.

After going out to bid, the Board of Directors selected Henry Celis, owner of H&R Painting, to make the improvements.

Celis has been a professional painter with various companies for more than 20 years, and is best known for the original restoration of the Will S. Green house, the Colusa County courthouse, Zumwalt building, and Colusa Casino & Resort.

He started H&R Painting in Colusa with his wife, Becky Bickley-Celis, about a year ago.

Celis said he would repair the wear and rust, and paint the fence at the cemetery with a higher quality primer and paint than what was originally used.

“It’s going to last a very long time,” Celis said.

Carrancho said the cemetery Board, which includes also Bill Barrett and George Costa, thanks all who have contributed money to the cemetery district over the years.

“We keep a list of all donors,” she said.

Carrancho said the Board said there is still much more work that needs to be done at the cemetery, including planting a few new trees.

Although the primary funding for the beautification project is received in memory of deceased love ones, the Cemetery Board accepts and encourages anyone to donate.

Donations can be sent to Maxwell Cemetery Beautification at P.O. Box 201, Maxwell, CA 95955.
