Egling fifth graders pass drug resistance education

Essay winners Diana Prieto Badillo, Luke Kalfsbeek, Jacob Cerney, and Mercedes Gomez,
with Deputy Leanne Knudsen, were chosen to read their winning essays at the Egling Middle
School D.A.R.E. graduation, held in the Colusa Community Theater on May 30.

Egling Middle School fifth graders promised to live safe, responsible, and drug-free lives before School Resource Officer Leanne Knudsen and Colusa County Sheriff Joe Garofalo presented them with certificates indicating their completion of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program.

The D.A.R.E. Program is implemented in 75 percent of the nation’s school districts, and in more than 43 countries.

One of the requirements of the program is completing a report using the information from the lessons, and writing an essay in their own words about how D.A.R.E. would benefit their lives.

Knudsen chose Diana Prieto Badillo, Luke Kalfsbeek, Jacob Cerney, and Mercedes Gomez to read their essays during the May 30 ceremony at the Community Theater.

“I’ve been in the D.A.R.E. 10 weeks and it taught me to be a good citizen, how to stop bullying, and a lot of great things,” Badillo said.

Retired Colusa Unified school nurse Barbara Hankins “double dog dared” the students to use what they learned in D.A.R.E. to make good decisions in their lives.

Hankins spoke of the thousands of needless drug, alcohol, and tobacco-related deaths that could be avoided if youth chose not to start using. â–
