Revived senior citizen event at Fair enthusiastically supported

Lanky, the new clown in town, places a balloon bracelet on the wrist of Rita Rourke as friends gather for
the new and improved Colusa County Fair senior citizen luncheon on Friday.

Dozens of senior citizens gathered at Etchepare Garden on Friday to enjoy a barbecue, tour the Colusa County Fairgrounds by train, and browse the exhibits.

Those who attended the event at noon were allowed to return during the fair’s regular hours at no charge.

About 60 people enjoyed the cooler-than-usual temperatures for June, and had the opportunity to socialize with people they hadn’t seen for awhile.

This was the first year the Colusa City Firefighters Association organized the event with the Colusa Lions Club and the Colusa County Fair Foundation, after word got out the annual event was to be canceled.

“There was some talk about this going away,” said Firefighter Michael Acosta.  “We didn’t want to see that happen.”

The Colusa Lions Club barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, which were served with potato salad, macaroni salad, and fresh fruit, along with cake for dessert.

“There (were) a lot more people here this year than before,” said Alma Hickel, of Colusa. “That is a good thing.”

Senior citizens also got to see Lanky the Clown twist balloons into animals and other shapes, as well as pet champion chickens and rabbits.

While trying to revive the failing event, organizers sent a “shout out” for more volunteers, which was enthusiastically answered.

“One thing I can really say about this community is that when we need help, we come together,” Acosta said.

Acosta said he believes the sky is the limit in the future for the Colusa County Fair’s senior citizen event.

Blue Collar Catering was a major sponsor this year, and Acosta said he hopes to have elegant food at the event in the future. Messick’s Ace Hardware and the Colusa Casino also lent their support, and those attending the luncheon were generous when Acosta passed the boot for donations.

“This will give us a good start for next year,” he said.
