Mata sworn as sergeant at Williams Police

Last Wednesday, the Williams Police Department officially promoted Daniel Martin Mata to the rank of sergeant in a small ceremony attended by department representatives, city officials, and Mata’s family.

Mata’s wife, Andrea, was responsible for pinning her husband’s sergeant’s badge on his uniform.

Mata had been serving as an acting sergeant since February. He unofficially took over the position that was vacated when former Interim Chief Randy Ulibarri promoted current Chief Ed Anderson to the rank of lieutenant. Both men attended the ceremony last week.

Mata has been at the Williams Police Department for 13 years. He began his tenure there on Feb. 20, 2004 as a reserve officer. In June of that year, Mata was hired as a full-time officer. Throughout his career, Mata worked as a patrol officer, field training officer, detective, drug recognition expert, gang expert, G.R.E.A.T instructor, corporal, range master, taser instructor and acting sergeant. He has twice been honored as the Colusa Rotary Peace Officer of the Year for the Williams Police Department, first in 2005, and again last year.

In addition to being named the department’s Peace Officer of the Year last year, Mata was awarded the Chief’s Commendation Medal for performing CPR and saving the life of Williams resident Deborah Reed on March 15, 2016.

“Dan is well respected within our department and the community,” Chief Anderson said. “His leadership skills have shined through for many years. Dan worked very hard to attain this goal, and has earned this promotion.”
