Deputy Sheriff’s Association golf fundraiser a success

More than 50 people took to the fairways at Colusa Golf & Country Club on Saturday to help a local non-profit fund their scholarship program and charitable activities.

According to organizer Janice Bell, the Colusa County Deputy Sheriff’s Association’s Golf Tournament fundraiser was a resounding success.

“We had a very fun golf tournament over the weekend,” Bell said. “We had a great turnout.”

All told, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association (DSA) cleared more than $4,000. The primary purpose for that money will be funding scholarships for graduating high school seniors in Colusa County, who are interested in a career in law enforcement.

“The main thing is to raise money for our scholarships,” said DSA President Michael Bradwell, who is a sergeant at the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office.

The funds raised can also be used for any number of charitable activities that the DSA is involved with throughout the year, from donations to local sports programs to supporting the activities of civic groups, and more.

“We try to do something every year for the DSA, and put on an event in the community. We like to show our presence and raise money to support the youth in our county,” Bradwell said. “We’d like to have even more events like this, but the planning, processing, and organizing – getting everyone going – can be difficult at times.”

The DSA again proved up to the task, as a total of 13 four-man teams competed in the tournament, many of which were composed of law enforcement officers from agencies both within and outside of the county. The winning team was made up of Colusa Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Purcell and Deputy Trent Beck, who played with Eric Rasmussen and Nic Weber.

Although the event was organized independently by the DSA and not the Sheriff’s Office itself, Colusa County Sheriff Joe Garofalo did play in the event, and said he was happy to see the DSA’s golf tournament return after a brief absence.

“It’s been several years since the DSA has had a golf tournament fundraiser,” Garofalo said. “I’m delighted to see it come back, and was thrilled to get to play in it.” ■
