Unidentified man dies in rollover crash near Williams

Early Monday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer responded to an overturned vehicle that was on fire on the side of Highway 20, west of Walnut Drive near Williams, and discovered an unidentified male dead in the driver’s seat.

According to the report from the California Highway Patrol, officers from the department were patrolling the area at about 1:33 AM on Monday morning when they observed the overturned vehicle – described only as a 2002 Dodge – located down an embankment off of Highway 20. Seeing the vehicle was on fire, the responding officer attempted to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful. CHP said that the gasoline tank of the vehicle subsequently exploded and caught the surrounding vegetation on fire.

The Williams Fire Department and Cal Fire responded and extinguished the vegetation fire, which Williams Fire Chief Jeff Gilbert said was “very small,” burning only about a 50 foot by 50 foot section of grass.

CHP said that the deceased male was located in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Through their preliminary investigation, CHP said that they had determined the vehicle was traveling westbound on Highway 20 when it left the roadway in a northwesterly direction, became airborne, and landed on its roof. The crash is still being investigated, CHP said.

The Colusa County Sheriff’s Office is handling the coroner’s case. As of Monday, the Sheriff’s Office had yet to identify the man.
