Two suffer “major injuries” in Interstate 5 collision

A man and a woman were transported to Enloe Medical Center with major injuries from a two-car collision on Interstate 5 on Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said in a press release on Monday.

At about 2:25 PM on Saturday afternoon, Navdeep Randhawa, 23, of Citrus Heights, was driving a 2016 Toyota in the fast lane of northbound Interstate 5 at an unknown rate of speed, approaching the rear of a second vehicle containing Williams Charlson, 71, and Martha Charlson, 68, both of Brentwood, CHP said.

For an unknown reason, Randhawa allowed her vehicle to leave the main traveled portion of Interstate 5 and traveled into the center divide. CHP said that Randhawa turned the car to the right in an attempt to move back onto the roadway, and as Randhawa’s vehicle moved back into the northbound fast lane, it the right-front portion of her car collided with the left side of the 2010 Acura being driven by Williams Charlson. After hitting the Charlson’s car, Randhawa’s vehicle traveled back into the center divide and ultimately into the southbound lanes of traffic, before overturning and coming to a rest on its wheels, facing in a southwesterly direction, on the west shoulder of Interstate 5.

Randhawa sustained “major injuries” as a result of the crash, including a possible broken right clavicle and a number of lacerations and scrapes, CHP said. She was transported by ambulance to Enloe Medical Center. Her passenger, Harkeerat Sandhu, 25, of Tracy, also suffered major injuries, including major internal upper body trauma, along with various lacerations and scrapes. Sandhu had to be transported to Enloe Medical Center via Enloe Air Ambulance, CHP said. Sandhu was listed in critical condition.

Williams and Martha Charlson escaped injury in the collision, and were able to pull their vehicle safely to the side of the road after the incident, north of the collision location.
