Fairgrounds prepares for Pumpkin Village, volunteers needed

October is here and in just over 25 days ghouls, goblins, and trick-or-treaters will cast their presence on city streets.

In just a few short weeks, Colusa’s Pumpkin Village will return for its third year.

“We are planning for yet another great year,” said Jonathan Howard, Colusa Fairgrounds CEO. “And we will be open for two weekends this year.”

Open 10 AM to 4 PM on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21—22, and Oct. 28-—29, the Pumpkin Village offers a variety of fun for the whole family, offering free parking and free admission.

“Many of the events are free,” said Howard. “A family can come out to Pumpkin Village, grab a pumpkin, and have fun – all on a family-friendly budget.”

While many events are free, some activities do require tickets.

“Activities such as the pony rides, carnival rides, and the petting zoo will require tickets; but we’re offering a great deal for those wanting to extend their fun,” said Howard.

Wristbands are on sale for $25 if purchased before Oct. 20. Wristbands are $30 at the gate.

“To sweeten the deal, if you buy a wristband you will get a free pumpkin,” said Howard. Pumpkins are $5 during the event.

Looking for an even better deal? From 10 AM to Noon on Sunday, Oct. 22, wristbands will be buy-one get-one free, and all day Sunday, Oct. 29, pumpkins will be buy-one get-one free.

Current activities include the pumpkin patch, pony rides, hay maze, corn cannon, petting zoo, carnival rides, tomato train, the infamous hay pyramid, a learning center, rubber ducky races, a hay ride, and much more.

“It is going to be a jam packed event,” said Howard. “We hope everyone will come check out the fun at Pumpkin Village.”

Volunteers Needed

“We are in desperate need of volunteers to operate the activities during the week,” said Araceli Plaza, Colusa Fairgrounds Office Assistant. “We need volunteers during the school field trip days. October 23-26.”

With Pumpkin Village providing many of its activities at no cost, the event relies heavily on volunteers to make it happen.

“We need people for all kinds of tasks,” said Plaza. “You can help drive the hay truck, supervise the pumpkin patch, or volunteer to supervise and assist at one of the many activities offered at pumpkin village.”

Plaza said that anyone wishing to volunteer can give her a call at (530) 458-2641 Ext. 106.

“You can volunteer for a couple of hours, the whole day, or the whole weekend,” said Plaza. “Give me a call.”

Special Visitors at Pumpkin Village

Howard commented that a special visit from a particular square pumpkin and the return of the Headless Horseman will add to the fun of Pumpkin Village.

“If history repeats itself, the headless horseman could return the week of Pumpkin Village on Monday, Oct. 16.,” said Howard.

Additionally, the Pumpkin Village is an official ‘spokes-pumpkin’ for National Bullying Prevention and is promoted with help of the cartoon character ‘Spookley the Square Pumpkin’.

“We are proud to be a official Spookley Pumpkin Patch,” said Howard. “We hope he’ll make a stop and visit the kids.”
