Pierce Student Wins Local Speak-Off

Carlyn Marsh is no stranger to public speaking and she made that very clear as she delivered a four and a half minute speech completely from memory during the Colusa County Resource Conservation Districts speaking contest held on Oct. 4.

The local contest is held in conjunction with the California Association of Conservation District’s (CARCD) High School Speak-Off Contest. Each year students are provided with a conservation or agricultural theme to create a speech to present at the local level. The first place speaker moves on to compete at the regional contest where the winner moves on to the state level.

This year’s theme was “How can RCDs better involve their communities in conservation?”

Carlyn is a senior at Pierce High School, and has competed in the local contest in 2014, 2016 (where she tied for second place) and now 2017.

“Her sister Sarah Marsh has also been a contestant in the past, and even went on to win at the state level,” said Jackie Filter, the CCRCD’s Natural Resource Coordinator. “So it was no surprise when Carlyn won first place last week with a seamless speech.”

Filter stated that her speech centered on how RCDs could connect better to the community by acknowledging members for their contribution to conservation, protection, and enhancement of natural resources.

“Carlyn spoke with a lot of confidence and her speech invoked a lot of thought and consideration for me as an RCD employee. I have a lot of confidence in her to move on to the state level,” said Filter.

Now, Carlyn will go on to the CARCD Sacramento Valley Regional Meeting, hosted by the Colusa County RCD in Williams, on October 17, and compete against other high school students from the region.

“If she wins, she will go on to the state level and compete at the CARCD Annual Conference in Sacramento on November 17, with students from all over California,” said Filter.
