Fair Board unanimously agrees to terminate CEO

The Colusa County Fair Board of Directors announced after a special meeting on Thursday evening that they were terminating the contract of CEO Jonathan Howard, effective immediately.

At the conclusion of a closed session that lasted the better part of two hours, the 44th District Agricultural Association’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to part ways with Howard, who served as the CEO for just under three years. Howard was previously placed on administrative leave during the Fair Board’s regular meeting on Sept. 28.

On Thursday, after the board reconvened in open session and announced that they had fired Howard, the board offered no further comment or explanation, saying that their decision to terminate his contract amounted to a personnel matter.

Michele Dias, General Counsel for the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), was present at the meeting during the closed session, along with two other representatives from the department. Dias also declined to comment on Howard’s firing after the meeting.

“This is a personnel matter, and something we will not comment on,” Dias said.

On Monday, Fair Board President Terry Bressler said that the board would discuss its options for filling the recently-vacated CEO at this month’s regularly scheduled meeting.

“At the next board meeting, we’re going to discuss whether we’re going to hire an interim, or short-term manager, or hold off and hire a permanent manager later on,” Bressler said.

The upcoming meeting of the 44th District Agricultural Association Board of Directors is scheduled for 6 PM on Oct. 26, in the Colusa County Fair Board Room.
