Maxwell FBLA balloon ceremony celebrates, remembers, and raises awareness for cancer

At the conclusion of its homecoming varsity football game, the Maxwell High School FBLA Chapter held its first balloon ceremony to honor those who’ve survived cancer or lost their battle to the vicious disease.

“It was fun, but there were a lot of tears during the ceremony,” said participant Sarah Fleming.

Karsyn Gwinnup sang a cover of Miley Cyrus’, “The Climb,” as 50 helium balloons, with an LED light inside each, lit up the darkened football field. Spectators watched as the balloons slowly disappeared into the night sky.

“We had a good turnout for our first year, and the ceremony was spectacular,” said Maxwell’s FBLA Advisor, Stacey Atencio.

The event raised over $300 and donated it to the Colusa County Breast Cancer Fund.

“Thank you to everyone who helped out and made this fundraiser a huge success. We look forward to continuing this new tradition,” said Atencio.
