Irwin Leroy Sweet, 96, died peacefully at his home on December 11, 2017. Aside from his time in the military, Irwin was a lifelong resident of Arbuckle, where he raised his family and farmed almonds.

Irwin was born at home in Arbuckle on June 18, 1921 to Hollis and Lily Sweet. He often reminisced about growing up on his family farm during the Great Depression, recalling how lucky they were to have big midday meals out on the ranch, followed by his mother’s homemade pies. He also loved telling the story about purchasing his first car, a Model T Ford, for $10.00 at the age of 14. Only 20 years when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Irwin worked at McClellan Air Force Base where he stayed until he was assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps’ Mighty 8th Bomber Command in 1942. Before shipping out, he married his sweetheart, Billie Tate. Stationed in England for the duration, Irwin patched up B-17s for the 337th bombardment. Irwin returned home in 1945, where he farmed almonds and raised seven children with Billie.

Irwin was an avid reader up until the week before his death. He loved Zane Grey, and American and military history. He questioned everything and loved a good debate. He believed in hard work, kindness and letting others pursue their own path. He was generous without expectation and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his children, John Sweet, Nancy Manor, Carolyn Dennis, Peter Sweet and Patricia Ozanich; his sister Blanche Sack and a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years and his sons, Leroy and Tom.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Arbuckle Cemetery on Saturday, December 30, at 1 PM, followed by a reception at the Arbuckle Golf Course.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to: the Friends of the Colusa County Free Library, P.O. Box 1105, Colusa, CA 95932; or the Veterans Tribute Wall in Colusa’s Memorial Park, P.O. Box 294, Colusa, CA 95932.
