Life as I see it (05/31/2017)

It has been a week of change. I went to Social Security to formally change my name.

You may notice I couldn’t let go entirely of Craigo.  There are reasons that may be selfish but otherwise practical.

I’ve worked long and hard to establish a writing, speaking and business career under the recognizable byline of Craigo. The common sense part of me tells me not to give that up.

Selfishly, I didn’t want to depart from the family bond I share  by carrying the same name as my children. Tom supports my wishes and my feelings, so we’re good.

This is Memorial Day weekend as I write. It’s our first weekend this year to stay at Blue Lake. The weather is kind of cool but nice. I cooked breakfast outside on the propane griddle. It’s a massive griddle big enough to cook the whole meal at once. I’ve found I totally like cooking outdoors as long as I have the convenience of the griddle.

There are a lot of campers here this weekend. That is the norm for this first holiday of summer, but I also remember the significance of it all. It is important to recall those that have sacrificed and gone on.

When living in North Dakota, many Memorial Days were spent at programs and remembrances honoring those who gave their lives in service so that you and I could be free. We owe a great debt to those men and women who gave their  all for us.

On social media this morning I saw a post recalling my dear friend Gloria Pogue and the loss of her beloved son Mike. It was a dark day the day we learned Mike was gone. It was my first experience with a war-related death.

Vietnam was a mystery to all of us then. We understood very little but we knew for sure Mike was gone from us.

Every American has similar story. So today between picnics, BBQs or anything we do we should take time to remember and add a moment to be grateful.

Because of THEM; Life can be good today.
