Life as I see it: 08/30/2017

My whole life I have been blessed with good skin. Rarely saw a pimple in my youth; my face was neither dry nor oily. But I’ve discovered that with age comes change – and challenge.

For a month or so I’ve been battling what I now know is rosacea. My research tells me that it comes often as we grow older.

A visit to the dermatologist confirmed my suspicion and I’m now taking a $400 antibiotic (only $180 with co-pay) and slathering my face with prescribed cream.

I can see it fading after a few days now.

The downside is that there is a list of food triggers that can set me off. Looking at the list it named most of my favorite things.

So the day that I REALLY flared up I learned that I had eaten a full day’s diet of triggers.

Eggplant parmesan (eggplant and cheese, as well as any tomato based sauce, are big time triggers). So is the steamed spinach I ate instead of indulging in pasta.

To top it off we had frozen yogurt for supper. I got the no sugar added to be good, unknowingly poisoning my skin anyway!

I’m not going to give up the food I love forever, but I will eat it less and not at all while I’m trying to clear the outbreak.

Meanwhile, still changing my looks a bit, I now have a very short hairdo. I love it because all I do is blow it dry and comb it with my hands and a little molding gel. Easy! My hairdresser Bertha Mondragon is an artist.

I haven’t had hair this short since I was 16 and wore the ever-popular Sassoon of the time.

I’m continuing to go to the gym and eating less, so I’ve dropped a few pounds. The key to all this aging and fighting it is to keep moving, try to keep improving.

Today is a cheat day though. After church, we plan to go to a local café for the best hamburgers around. I’ll get back at it tomorrow.

The summer is inching away. We only have a few more weekends to enjoy the lake. We close it down the end of October.

This weekend we went out there, but alas, I had to stay in the camper. No sun exposure for me this trip. Next week is the holiday though, so hopefully, by then I can do more outdoor things.

This has been a good summer, but I have to admit I’m ready for fall and all that it brings. I love the cooler days, and frankly, I look better in warmer clothes.

My advice for this week is to take care of you. Keep an eye out for any changes that may come along. Don’t let things go.

We have one body in this life. We need to take care of it.

Meanwhile, life is good today.
