Life as I see it (12/06/2017)

It’s a “Wonder” for sure.

We went to see the much anticipated (by me) film entitled “Wonder.” It’s a story about a boy born with a facial deformity, and his life as he begins public school for the first time as he enters middle school. Middle school can be strict in the best of circumstances, so you can imagine what this little guy faced.

But face it he did. Not only did he face the challenges but he overcame the obstacles.
Tom and I are both big old cry babies, so you can imagine what it was like with the two of us watching this movie.

We came away from it with a renewed sense of faith, determination and probably a lot of lessons learned.

A big lesson for me was to stop wallowing in my little troubles and as I wrote last week; Let go and let God.

No matter what we do in this old life, there is always going to be someone or something to darken our path. It’s up to us whether we let that darkness swallow us up, or if we just light a candle and get on with it. I’m pretty sure I’m buying more candles.

I had a phone call this week from my dear friend Jean. We covered a lot of territory in one phone call. I came away from that phone call knowing that even though we now live a lot of miles apart, we still love each other and we can always count on the other one to have our backs.

Jean was one of the first people I met when I moved to Beach, ND so many years ago. She and my late husband David had been best friends in high school, so she was someone he wanted me to meet.

It was an instant bond not only with Jean but with her family as well. My middle child once told me she didn’t know Jean’s mom wasn’t her real grandma until junior high. That’s when Grandma Dotchie’s “real” grandson told my daughter the truth.

Nonetheless, Dotchie treated us like her kids and our children like her grandchildren.

I still miss Dotchie.

But now let’s get back to Jean. Jean has loved me and mine from day one. She has a special bond with my son since she has known him literally since he took his first breath. She was there with me in the delivery room when he was born.

Along the way, I have gained some wonderful friends that have become family.

I think we are blessed with the family God gives us, but blessed again when we allow other people into our lives.

I see those same qualities in my kids. They each have a strong circle that surrounds them. At the head of that circle is, of course, their mama.

They all got together this week to decorate for Christmas as my oldest daughter’s house. They sent photos and videos that melted my heart, and so made me wish to be there with them.

The good news is that Tom and I will head that way soon. Then we will all be together.

I once as a young woman (pre-kids) visited my cousin. All of her kids and a passel of grandkids were there. It was a chaos of noise and laughter. I looked over to see my cousin sitting and watching and wearing a smile on her face. I asked her what she was doing, and she told me she was just soaking it in. I didn’t get then. Now I get it.

I can’t wait to get back to Beach, ND and start soaking it in.

Life is good today.
