Williams Girls hang tough versus Durham

Williams High School’s varsity girls basketball team dropped its Mid-Valley League contest to visiting Durham, 56-10, on Tuesday night.

Despite a running clock taking place before halftime, the Lady Yellowjackets battled their hearts out the entire game.

“Two seconds left on the clock and we have a girl on the floor scrapping for the ball,” Williams coach Lane Bledsoe said. “These girls may not win every game, but they never give up.”

Daniela Plaza scooped up a team-leading six rebounds and drained a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.

Barbara Bledsoe scored Williams’ first basket with less than a minute remaining in the first half. She banked a shot from just inside the 3-point arc and also absorbed a brutal charge on defense in the first quarter.

The Lady Yellowjackets committed 25 turnovers that led to many easy buckets and scoring opportunities for Durham, but Williams never stopped battling.

“Sometimes things go bad,” Coach Bledsoe said. “How you respond shows what kind of team you have and what kind of person you are. I really enjoy coaching them. They never give up.”

Natalie Del Horno netted a lay-up on a fast break, splitting multiple defenders as she attacked the hoop late in the game. She also pulled down five rebounds and stole the ball twice.

Lisette Chavez sparked the Lady Yellowjackets off the bench in the third quarter, nabbing a pair of defensive rebounds and blocking a shot.

“She (Lisette) is one of the kids who gives me everything she can,” Coach Bledsoe said. “She always works hard and never complains.”

Durham opened the game with full-court defensive pressure and streaked to a 26-0 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Though the Lady Trojans had mounted an insurmountable lead by the fourth, Williams matched them with eight points in the quarter.

“When you’re knocked down, you get back up,” Coach Bledsoe said. “That’s true in sports and it gets you ready for life.”

The Lady Yellowjackets (0-2 MVL, 5-13) return to their home floor on Friday against East Nicolaus and travel to Durham’s territory on Tuesday.
