Williams hoops falls to Trinity in title game

The Williams high school boys basketball team, the top-seeded team in the Northern Section Division V tournament, fell to the third-seeded Trinity Wolves 70-56 last Saturday night at Shasta College in the NSCIF finals.

The Yellowjackets traded baskets with the Wolves in the early goings of the first quarter, but Trinity was able to pull away, closing out the first quarter with a 9-2 run as Williams struggled to make shots. The run continued into the second quarter, as Trinity doubled Williams’ score 20-10 to pull out to a 37-20 lead.

Trinity kept the pressure on throughout the remainder of the game, maintaining at least a 13-point lead through the final whistle to bring Williams’ 11-game win streak to a end and the section title back to Weaverville.

The Yellowjackets had a tough time shooting the ball, shooting just 33 percent from the field and 38 percent from the free-throw line as a team. From three-point range, Williams shot 4-for-33, just 12 percent on the night. The only player who shot above 25 percent from long distance was Cesar Lopez, who came off the bench in the second half and sank two of his four three-point attempts, both in the fourth quarter.

Alex Velazquez was once again the Yellowjackets top player, and had a hand in more than half of Williams’ offensive production. Velazquez finished with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists and a block. Anthony Davalos finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and a steal, while Bryson Bowen added 5 points, a block and pulled down 10 rebounds.

For Trinity, Brian Harper led the way with 27 points. Marcus Williamson scored 16 points, and Damien Trunkey added eight.

By making it to the section finals, Williams qualified for the CIF State Tournament for the second straight year. The Yellowjackets earned the No. 14 seed in the tournament, and will travel to the College of Marin today to face the No. 3 seed Branson Bulls (24-8), who defeated Bentley 49-37 in the North Coast CIF Section Championship. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
