SEASON PREVIEW: Williams softball looking to rebuild

With about two-thirds of the Williams softball team’s 23 players being newcomers, the Lady Yellowjackets are hoping they can make a smooth transition.

The Jackets have eight returners from last season, including senior Caroline Molina, who will be the starting pitcher.

“For this season, I hope my team and I will learn more skills through playing and continue to have our bond grow stronger. I want us to have great times together.” said Molina.

Of the 15 newcomers, 10 of those players are freshman. Williams has a new head coach, as well. Kristi Hill, who is no stranger to the athletic department at Williams High School, will lead the Yellowjackets this season.

“This group of girls has great potential. We are a new team and will be working on transitioning. Teaching fundamentals and focusing on pitching and batting will be crucial,” said Hill.

The returning leadership from last year is attempting to improve on its previous disappointing season, as the

Jackets went without a win, ending with a 0-21 record.

“There is great potential within this team. Yes, we are a young team but I have confidence in the seasoned players to help out and pull us together. We have two freshman currently working on pitching. This is a positive step towards a great season,” said Hill.

Practice time for the Jackets has been bleak with wet field conditions and many of the team’s core players recently wrapping up with soccer play-offs.

“We haven’t had any live pitching practice as yet. The girls’ first taste of live pitching will come from Maxwell Tuesday afternoon,” said Hill.

“I’m looking forward to getting close with the team because we have a great group of girls this year. I’m sure that we can become very close-knit group and rack up some  wins,” said junior Barbara Bledsoe.

The Yellowjackets opened their season yesterday against non-conference team the Maxwell Panthers.
