Ducks cap season with trip to California Youth Shooting Sports Association’s State Trap Shoot, high finishes

Looking at the number of medals as the Colusa County Youth Shooting Sports club has brought home over the course of the California Youth Shooting Sports Association season, it’s easy to forget that the club is only in its infancy.

The Ducks inaugural season competing in the CYSSA has been a fruitful one for many of the youth shooters that compose the team. One such individual is Blake Kalfsbeek, who most recently earned a blue ribbon in the Intermediate-Entry division of the CYSSA State Trap Shoot, out-shooting a field of 65 competitors in his division. The CYSSA State Trap Shoot was held last weekend at the Angels Camp Gun Club.

Kalfsbeek hit 190 of 200 targets on Saturday, and came out just one target ahead of the second-place competitor, Mason Andelin, who is a member of the Auburn Gold Miners Junior Gun Club.

For his first-place individual finish, Kalfsbeek was awarded a silver CYSSA State Trap Shoot belt buckle.

Kalfsbeek’s 190 also helped propel the Duck’s Intermediate-Entry Division squad, made up of five Ducks shooters, to a second place finish. Joining Kalfsbeek on the five man squad were Chase Carrere, who shot 178 of 200 targets, Anthony Felix and Clay Randolt who each shot 173, Tyler Moss, who shot 135. Cumulatively, the Ducks’ IE squad shot 849 of 1,000 targets, finishing 20 behind the Auburn Gold Miners’ squad.

The Ducks’ three man Rookie Division squad also reached the podium at the CYSSA State Trap Shoot, also earning a second place finish. Gus Armstrong hit 177 of his 200 targets, Luke Kalfsbeek hit 157, and Carter Long hit 172 for a cumulative score of 506 – just six targets behind the squad from Coon Creek.

Each member of the Ducks’ two second-place squads brought home trophies to add to their collection.

The Colusa County Youth Shooting Sports team, as a whole, finished in third place in the running for the High Five Award – determined by totaling the best five scores for a team.
