Colusa County Hall of Fame – Female Student-Athlete: Jocelyn Velazquez, Williams

Sports have always been a big part of Jocelyn Velazquez’s life. As a little girl, her parents signed her up for Little League and AYSO soccer.

Before high school, Valazquez was involved in nearly every sport her school offered, including soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball. During high school, she was a standout athlete in volleyball and soccer.

During her freshman year, Velazquez was one of the smallest girls on the volleyball team. She overcame a lack of size and strength to earn an award for being the Most Improved Player. The improvement continued throughout her career. During her senior year, her coach made her libero and team captain. She also was honored to receive Most Valuable Defensive Player.

Soccer has always been Velazquez’s sport, having played for ten years, including four on the Yellowjackets’ varsity squad. Velazquez was a highly decorated soccer player, receiving the Coach’s Award, Most Valuable offensive player, was twice named all-American Conference, once All-League, and was a team captain for two years. She was also chosen to play in the All Star Soccer Senior Showcase in Chico.

In addition to sports, Velazquez spent her time on schoolwork and Future Farmers of America. During her four years in FFA, she spent one year as chapter secretary and another as chapter president.

She was a standout student as well, earning merit honor roll, being elected ASB class secretary, and getting named Swarm of the Month.

Velazquez, who graduated June 2, said that she would like to thank her family and friends for always supporting her and cheering her on. She offered a special thanks to her mom, who would always wash her jerseys after games to make sure it was ready for the next one, as well as her coaches for pushing her to do better throughout the years, even though she couldn’t feel her legs after practice.■
