Colusa 42, Winters 14 – The RedHawks kept their SVL title hopes alive with a commanding win over Winters. Conner Saso was a force on offense and defense. Saso completed more than 70 percent of his passes for 135 yards, the bulk of which came on an 86-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Aksil Coombs in the third quarter. Saso added another 79 yards on the ground – including touchdown runs of 37 and 29 yards – and snagged four interceptions on defense. Colusa (5-4, 2-1 Sacramento Valley League) wraps up their regular season against Live Oak (1-8, 0-3 SVL) on Friday night.

Williams 0, Durham 36

Princeton 60, Westwood 14 – The Eagles (7-2, 5-1 8-man South League) cruised to a win on the road in their final regular season game, with Joey Wills leading the way. Wills rushed for 269 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Manny Espinoza toted the rock seven times for 146 yards and three touchdowns, and Jonathan Angel added 96 yards rushing and a touchdown on just for carries.

Princeton has Butte Valley (4–5, 3–4 8-man North League) at home in the opening round of the Division VI (8-man) Northern Section playoffs on Friday at 3 PM. The Eagles defeated Butte Valley 42-39 in Dorris on Sept. 1.


Colusa 0, Willows 3 – The RedHawks had a chance to capture a share of the Sacramento Valley League title, but came up short against the Division IV Honkers on Thursday (17-25, 15-25, 20-25).

Early on in the first set, Willows struggled to put attacks in play, allowing Colusa to crawl out to a two-point lead. Willows stormed back as their attacks finally found the mark, and the Honkers went on a 10-3 run to go up 22–15, prompting Colusa head coach Tina Lyons to call a time-out. The RedHawks responded with a side-out, but the Honkers kept the pressure on to win the set 25-17.

The RedHawks found themselves in an early hole in the second set after Willows opened with a 5–0 run. Colusa started building momentum and were able to close the gap, playing to a 13-16 score before the Honkers went on a 9-2 run to close the game out.

Despite a strong showing at the net from Carly Lay, the RedHawks fell couldn’t keep pace with the Honkers in the final set, falling 25-19.

Carly Lay led Colusa with eight kills. Annie Lay had eight assists, and Abby Huskey had 21 digs for the RedHawks. Colusa (26–10) earned the third seed in the Northern Section Division V playoff bracket, and were set to open against Hamilton (14–16) at the time of publication.

Pierce 3, Winters 0

Pierce 3, Live Oak 0 – The Bears were dominant in the last week of the regular season, starting with a 3–0 win over Winters on Tueday (25–16, 25–10, 25–4). Emily Kuykendall had seven kills in the match to lead the Bears, and Lauren Ornbaun dished out 11 assists.

Pierce played their way to another sweep on Thursday against Live Oak (25–14, 25–13, 25–14). Kuykendall’s 14 kills were once again a team high, while Kathy Corona and Callie Muniz added seven and six kills, respectively. Ornbaun and Emily Ehrke combined for a total of 31 of the Bears’ 33 total assists.

Pierce (24–10, 6–2 Sacramento Valley League) earned the fourth seed for the Northern Section Division IV playoffs, and will were set to face Sutter on Tuesday at the time of publication.

Maxwell 3, Biggs 0 – The Panthers wrapped up their regular season with a sweep of Mountain Valley League rivals Biggs (25–22, 25–22, 26–24).

“Its always great to end the regular season with a win. I’m looking forward to starting our first round of playoffs, next week,” said senior Sarah Fleming, whose seven digs were a team-high.

Maxwell was bolstered by the play of a pair of seniors – Grace Waddell and Tiffany Jenkins – at the service line, each of whom had six aces in the match.
