Colusa County hoops team wins Hardwood Fall League championship

A group of young Colusa County basketball players are Hardwood Palace Fall League seventh and eighth grade champions, having defeated the Rocklin-based YBA Ballers at the Hardwood Palace on Friday, 44-25.

The Colusa County Knights finished their regular season 6-2, with both losses coming against the YBA Ballers. After winning their first playoff game, the Knights had a chance to avenge those two losses when it mattered most – and they did just that.

Making the nine-man squad’s success more impressive was the relative youth of the team, which included a fourth grader, a sixth grader, and three seventh graders.

“A lot of the teams were way older, and we’re the smallest team from the smallest town, playing against all of the big city boys,” said Jose ‘Biggie’ Melesio, the team’s coach. “It was a good experience… This was the first time they every played together.”

The Knights are composed of Leo Trujillo, Brian Rosales, Jayr Ramirez, Alberto Duarte, Miguel Lievanos, Alex Abor, and Miguel Rivera, all of whom are from Williams, in addition to Guillermo Jauregui, of Arbuckle, and William Melesio, of Colusa.

In addition to the league championship, the group also took second place at the Yuba City Ballers Tournament in the eighth grade bracket, Melesio said.■
