Pierce headed to Durham looking to avenge regular season blowout loss

Pierce High School’s football team outlasted Winters, 53-46, in the opening round of the Northern Section Division IV playoffs last week, and the Bears now eagerly await a shot at redemption against No. 2 Durham in Friday’s semifinal.

Pierce also faced the Warriors in Week 10, the Sacramento Valley League finale for both teams, earning a 21-7 victory to secure their SVL crown with an unbeaten 4-0 mark (9-2 overall).

The Bears’ only losses this season came against the top two seeded teams in the division — No. 1 East Nicolaus and Durham. While the Spartans will try to maintain their perfect season in a rematch against Colusa, the Bears hope to erase the fateful memory of their 53-14 defeat to Durham from Week Six (September 29).

The Trojans’ only hope for repeating is to stymie the Kalfsbeek Duo — Dutch and Levi — who combined for five rushing touchdowns in last week’s playoff opener.

Dutch Kalfsbeek (6’2”/185) has brutalized teams with his arm and his legs this season as Pierce’s quarterback. He has passed for over 800 yards and 13 touchdowns to date, and is averaging over 10 yards per carry on option plays, rushing for over 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Levi Kalfsbeek has receptions in five different games this season and has averaged 80 rushing yards over the last two games. Curtis Vaughn and Tommy Davis round out the Bears’ formidable backfield, with over 500 rushing yards apiece and 13 scores between them this season.

Durham, whose only loss this year came against East Nicolaus, relies on a balanced attack with quarterback Adin Dubose at the helm.

Dubose has at least one touchdown in every game the Trojans have played, tallying 19 trips to the end zone thus far and over 1,400 passing yards.

Manny Tovalin has the ability to be a one-man wrecking crew in the Trojans backfield, averaging 123 rushing yards per game with 14 touchdowns this season. Fellow senior Angelo Tomassi also has 10 rushing scores to his credit and over 500 yards.

Kickoff for this matchup will be 7 p.m. on Friday at Durham High School, with the winner advancing to the championship game on Wednesday, Nov. 22.■
