Four volleyball players earn all-league honors


A total of four local volleyball players were recognized for their performance on the court in the 2017 season, earning all-league honors for the Sacramento Valley and Mid-Valley Leagues.

In the Sacramento Valley League, Pierce’s Lauren Ornbaun and Emily Kukendall and Colusa’s Annie Lay were tapped for the all-league team.

As seniors, Ornbuan and Kuykendall played a big part in the Bears’ run to the Northern Section semi-finals this season. Kuykendall led Pierce with 304 kills and 67 total blocks, according to MaxPreps. She finished second in the Northern Section in kills. Ornbaun had a team-high 514 assists, good for tenth highest in the Northern Section; her 184 kills and 192 digs were the second-highest totals on the team.

Lay, a sophomore setter for the RedHawks, was Colusa’s lone selection to the all-SVL team this season. She dished up 658 assists this season, the fifth highest total in the section, to help lead the RedHawks to the Northern Section Division V title game and their first win in the state championship playoffs.

In the Mid-Valley League, Williams’ Lizbeth Hernandez earned the only all-league nod for the Yellowjackets. Hernandez led the ‘Jackets in kills, and was second on the team in assists and blocks.
