Soccer: Colusa boys beat Gridley at home, fall to Bulldogs in Battle of the Buttes

A first-half double from forward Leo Guzman was enough to propel the Colusa RedHawks soccer team over the visiting Gridley Bulldogs on Thursday, 2-1.

Guzman’s first goal was unassisted, and came 15 minutes into the match. Gridley scored the equalizer in the 30th minute, but Guzman’s second goal came five minutes later, this time assisted by freshman forward Miguel Torres. The score wold hold to the final whistle, and Colusa improved its record to 3-1-1 in non-league play.

The RedHawks and Bulldogs locked horns again the following morning in Live Oak at the ‘Battle of the Buttes,’ and Gridley rebounded from the tough loss to trounce the RedHawks 7-2. Mario Galvan and Alejandro Rico each netted goals for Colusa.

“They showed up with a couple more players,” said Colusa coach Dan Kiely. “But I think we just got tired. Some of the starters were out on my side with injuries, and I think we just got wore out from Thursday. It was tough having turn around and play them again, right away.”

The RedHawks played three games at the Battle of the Buttes, their second coming against Yuba City High School. Kiely said he felt his team played particularly well against the Honkers, but lost 5-3.

“They played really well with the Yuba City varsity team. It was 3-3 until the end of the match, when they just pulled away,” Kiely said. “But I was happy with how they played.”
Christian Velez, Miguel Torres and Leo Guzman each scored against the Honkers. Jesus Hernandez had a pair of assists, and Victor Hernandez had one.

Kiely said that the games against Gridley and Yuba City – both bigger schools – will go a long way in preparing his team for games against its NSCIF Division III opponents.
Colusa got back on track in Saturday’s game against Los Molinos with a 6-0 victory. Alejandro Rico and Leo Guzman each had two goals for Colusa, while Edgar Garcia and Cesar Dominguez had one each. Dominic Garcia had two assists, and Guzman and Garcia each had one. ■
