CHP officer interrupts car burglary

A California Highway Patrol officer who was patrolling Highway 20 in western Colusa County on Friday caught a would-be burglar red-handed, the Williams Area CHP Office said in a news release.

According to the California Highway Patrol, at about 12:55 PM on Feb. 9, the officer was patrolling Highway 20, east of Highway 16, when he observed two vehicles on the right shoulder of the westbound lane. One of the vehicles, a Chevrolet Astro van, had previously been checked and found to be locked and unoccupied.

The officer observed a single male subject who was reaching into the passenger compartment from outside the passenger side of the van. The officer stopped behind the second vehicle, a white Toyota pickup, to offer assistance, but discovered that the subject – identified as John D. Van Note, 26, of Ukiah –had broken the passenger side front window of the van and was actively burglarizing it, CHP said in the release.

After further investigation, the officer determined that the Toyota pickup was an outstanding stolen vehicle out of Ukiah. Van Note was placed under arrest without incident, on suspicion of unlawful taking or driving of a vehicle, burglary, receiving stolen property, and vandalism. He was booked into the Colusa County Jail.
