Man arrested for pot DUI after four-car crash near Burchfield

An 18-year old Yuba City man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of cannabis in Colusa last week after he caused a four-car collision near Burchfield, the Colusa Police Department said.

According to the arresting officer, Colusa Police Officer Luis Ruiz, Jose Guillermo Hernandez-Ramirez was driving westbound on Fremont Street, between 3rd Street and 4th Street, when he drifted off into the eastbound lane and proceeded to crash into three vehicles traveling in that direction. The first vehicle that Hernandez-Ramirez struck was a Chevrolet pickup. Ruiz said that the driver of the pickup attempted to avoid the crash by moving over to the curb, but that Hernandez never corrected his path of travel.

“(Hernandez-Ramirez) side-swiped the Chevy pickup, bounced back in toward the middle of the road, then hit the left-front side, almost head-on with a Ford Explorer that was traveling behind it,” Ruiz said. “Another car, a red Mazda, was stopped at the intersection (of 4th Street and Fremont Street), waiting to make a left hand turn onto 4th Street… and her car was hit on the driver’s side.”

Ruiz said that no one was injured in the collision.

“He was driving at around the speed limit, or else the collision would’ve been a lot worse,” Ruiz said.

During the collision investigation, it was determined that Hernandez-Ramirez was driving under the influence of concentrated cannabis. Ruiz said that Hernandez-Ramirez admitted that he was using a ‘vape pen’ while he was driving.

“The kid admitted he was taking hits off of his vape pen, and went on to tell me he had cannabis wax in it,” Ruiz said.

He was arrested for misdemeanor driving under the influence of drugs, and was booked into the Colusa County Jail, with his bail set at $2,000. ■
