Pierce honors ‘Distinguished Dozen’


The top six students from the junior and senior classes at Pierce Joint Unified School District received recognition in front of friends and family, on Monday at the Arbuckle Golf Club during the district’s annual ‘Distinguished Dozen’ dinner.

The top six seniors each recognized a guest of honor that made an impact in his or her life.

Asa “Dutch” Kalfsbeek is the son of Mary and Asa Kalfsbeek. He selected Chris Tapia as his guest of honor.

Alexis Erickson is the daughter of Bill and Cara Erickson. She selected Chaz Franklin as her guest of honor. After high school, she plans to attend the University of Texas at Arlington to study microbiology.

Emily Hathaway is the daughter of Les and Michelle Hathaway. She selected Ellen Hester as her guest of honor. After graduating from Pierce, Hathaway plans to attend the University of Nebraska to major in Mathematics.

Carlyn Marsh is the daughter of Charles and Lorraine Marsh. She has been involved in high school sports, student government, junior fair board, as well as heavily involved in FFA. She is planning to attend the University of California, Davis to study Managerial Economics at their Honors Program.

Emily Kuykendall is the daughter of Amy and Steve Kuykendall. She selected Linda Trout as her guest of honor. After high school, Kuykendall plans to attend Feather River College and major in Behavioral Science.

Lauren Curtis is the daughter of Kurt Curtis and Leona Satterburg. She also selected Chaz Franklin as her guest of honor. After graduating, Curtis plans to attend Northwest Vista Community College.


Montserrat Ambriz is the daughter of Blanca and Jesus Ambriz. She has been involved in soccer, track and field and cross country at Pierce High School.

Darleny Corona is the daughter of Francisco Corona and Guadalupe Medina De Corona. She has served as a volunteer at Arbuckle Elementary School, served as the varsity football team’s stat taker, and is active in FFA.

Katherine Corona is the daughter of Merced and Lupe Corona. She has participated in a number of sports at Pierce, including volleyball, basketball, and track. She also volunteers at her church, is active with the Arbuckle Parks and Recreations District and in Leadership, and served as a class officer as a freshman (president) and sophomore (secretary).

Zechariah Dafoe is the son of Rebecca and Tom Dafoe. He is a two-sport athlete, participating in both golf and football, and is also active in FFA.

Emma Doherty is the daughter of Amy and Michael Doherty. She has competed in volleyball and golf for the Bears, and is also a member of the Dynamix Volleyball Club.

Doherty is also a member of the Junior Fair Board, was named Pierce’s Girls State representative, and is active in 4-H and FFA. She was this year’s FFA Field Day Chairperson, and has held a variety of offices for both her class and her 4-H chapter.

Cody Stafford is the son of Jeff and Adrienne Stafford. He plays football for Pierce, and is active in FBLA, through which he has learned organization, responsibility, and time management. ■
