NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED WEEKLY ON WEDNESDAY - WEBSITE UPDATED THURSDAY

The Season of Giving: Toy, school supply drives slated for coming weeks

With Christmas just around the corner, there are few ways county residents can get into the giving holiday spirit in the next two weeks – whether it’s donating toys to local children in need, supporting area teachers, or replacing books for school children affected by the Camp Fire in Butte County.

Camp Fire Relief Children’s Book Drive

The Colusa County Farm Bureau is asking for the community’s help in replacing the children’s books and classroom libraries in Paradise. They are asking county residents to donate new or gently used books at the Colusa County Farm Bureau Office, located at 520 Market St. in Colusa. For more information, contact Melodie Johnson at 458-5130 or melodie@colusafarmbureau.com

“Momo” Memorial Donation Drive

Colusa Made and the Tap Room at Colusa Made are holding a donation drive for local school kids and teachers, between 2 PM and 5 PM on Dec. 1, as part of their inaugural “Miracle on 8th Street” event. They are partnering with the Colusa County Rugby Football Club for activities, games, and gifts for the kids in the after school program in Colusa. They are also accepting monetary gifts and new or gently-used Scholastic grade level books for area teachers, as well as donations of classroom supplies.

The donation drive is named after the late Maureen “Momo” Langhi, mother of Colusa Made owner Kathleen Langhi.

“The story is that my mom, who was a teacher, passed away last April,” Langhi wrote in an email. “This started because I know the (Colusa County) Rugby team does their annual (toy) drive for the after school program kids. I then spoke to a couple teacher friends, because I had heard previously that in some places teachers had to pay for the copy paper for classroom exercises and homework sheets.  That’s when the Scholastic books for the classrooms and supplies came up.  This is a cause close to my mom’s heart and I look for ways to keep her spirit alive.”

Items needed for classroom supply donations include: colored construction paper, crayons, glue sticks, colored pencils, markers, scissors, Clorox Wipes, and whiteboard markers.

“From 2 PM to 5 PM on Saturday, Dec. 1, we’ll be out on 8th St. between Market and Main collecting items in rememberance of my mom and on behalf of all the great teachers and kids in our county.”

Chips for Kids

The California Highway Patrol Williams Area Office, the Colusa County Community Advocates for Parents and Children, and the Family Resource Center in Colusa County are partnering this year to put on the annual CHiPS for Kids Toy Drive, which provides toys and gifts to children of families in need.

Families who would like to be considered for a toy can pick up an application form at the Family Action Centers in Arbuckle, Williams, or Colusa. Forms are available in English and Spanish, and can also be found online at www.colusacapc.org or www.colusafrc.org. Application forms must be returned by Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 5 PM. They can be dropped off in person or emailed to cbowers@colusacapc.net.

The toy distribution will take place on Friday, Dec. 14, between 12 PM and 6:30 PM at the CAPC Office in Colusa, located at 149 Fifth St.

“We’ve had one year of experience, so we think we’re more prepared this year,” said CAPC program manager Carissa Bowers. “There were 169 children who received gifts last year, and this year we’re hoping for more. We’re very thankful for the work CHP is doing in the community.”
