Pierce graduate serves as US Navy Body Bearer for the 41st President of the United States

Seaman Preston Smith, a 2013 graduate of Pierce High School, represented the U.S. Navy as a member of the Joint Services Military Honor Guard for the funeral for the late President George H.W. Bush, who died on Nov. 30, 2018.

The honor guard carried the flag-draped casket of the 41st president through multiple formal processes, which were held at the U.S. Capitol and the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, in Houston, before escorting it to the Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, where the former president and war hero was laid to rest on Dec. 6, 2018, next to his wife, Barbara, and their daughter, Pauline Robinson “Robin” Bush, who died of Leukemia at the age of 3.

Smith previously served in the honor guard that escorted the casket of the late Sen. John McCain, who died in September. ■
