Grand Island Elementary students make music for Christmas

Grand Island Elementary School students perform music at their annual Christmas program on Dec. 12, 2018.

Grand Island Elementary School students entertained their small community of Grimes during their annual Christmas program last week.

The students swapped out their traditional play for music this year, which put a fresh twist to the holiday tradition.

“It was fantastic,” said Principal Summer Shadley.

Shadley said she was a little nervous at first how the community would react with the change, but said everyone seemed to enjoy the performances.

“I had people come up afterward and say they really liked it,” she said.

Grand Island serves students in Transitional Kindergarten though fifth grade, and currently has around 42 students enrolled.

Because having low enrollment tends to put the school at risk of closing, Shadley said the district would be looking at ways to boost interest in the elementary school, which has served the Grand Island area for decades. Among them will be the relaunch of an updated Facebook page.

Parents who missed out enrolling their children in transitional kindergarten in Arbuckle before classes reached maximum enrollment are encouraged to enroll their youngsters in Grand Island. ■
