Life as I see it (01/10/2018)

A 2018 is a whirlwind and it’s just begun. I find myself working on several projects at once. Some give to me great pleasure and others leave me with a sense of loss somehow.
I spent a couple of days at my folks’ former home this week. The work of clearing out 70 plus years of living there continues. We are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel though.

This week, my nieces Sonya and Melanie came to help. As always I brag about the genes of Wonder Woman running through our blood line. These two women (considerably younger than me) made me look like a weakling with the amount of work they accomplished in a few hours.

They moved to the downstairs all of the furniture from upstairs, which was a feat in itself. What gave me pleasure most of all was now my two great, great nephews will be sleeping in the twin beds from my room. Also in their room and in my niece’s room are the chest of drawers and desk that my sister and I both used.

That whole scenario just makes me feel good. It is now being loved by family members and not gone to strangers. Silly maybe, I know its just pieces of wood, but it represented a time I remember as being blessed, safe and loved.

My friend Sue stayed with us when we were teens. My folks considered her a daughter as well. I told her it seemed like yesterday when we were sharing those twin beds and that I would have never imagined then that they would one day belong to great, great nephews.
I watched as the nieces looked around and carefully selected things they wanted to take home. I was impressed with Sonya because she wanted things that she remembered seeing GranGran use to cook and bake. Treasuring our memories runs deep in this family of ours.

As I’ve said before, there aren’t any great financial finds in that home. Simple things, useful things, and practical things are what we are finding.

I found a lot of new things, still in boxes with tags on it. I can only assume, since my folks were if its not broke don’t fix it kind of people they most likely put new things away to save until they “needed” them.

Once we finish clearing and cleaning and ultimately sell the house, I’m going to miss having that little piece of memory to stay in once in a while.

I love my life, but I also loved the life I had growing up. Being in that house reminds me time again just how fortunate we were. Of course, selling the house won’t remove the memories from my heart and mind. Those are mine to keep forever.

Coming up this Saturday in Colusa County is the annual Colusa Firemen’s Steak and Crab Feed. This is a favorite event for us so we are looking forward to attending.

Tom likes crab ok, but he doesn’t like the work it takes to get to it, so I’ll give him my steak and he’ll give me his crab. It works for me. Of course if we win an auction item or raffle item or two that’s even better. I’m sorry to say that last year we got skunked, so one can hope for this year.

The event has over the years become a time of reunion of sorts. We always have a group of friends that share a table. It’s time to visit, eat well and just revel in the good time of being with friends once again. This past year many of us have made changes in our lives including locations we now call home. The fact that we can get together for this event is kind of a big deal to us. One day at a time, one year at a time; we’ll see how long we can do it.

There are more changes taking place in our lives daily, but life remains good today.
