Home Sports Ducks bring home impressive haul from Sporting Clays State Shoot

Ducks bring home impressive haul from Sporting Clays State Shoot

Their aim was true and their awards were plentiful: the Colusa County Ducks wrapped up the 2018 Sporting Clays season this weekend in Zamora, and it was a day to remember for the program.

A total of nine individual shooters from the Colusa County Youth Shooting Sports club reached the podium at the California Youth Shooting Sports Association’s 2018 Sporting Clays State Shoot, which took place at Quail Point Hunt Club on Sunday.

“Todays shoot was a great end to a great season,” said head coach Bruce Hardwick. “A lot of hard work and dedication went into this season and it definitely paid off for us Sunday.”

Earning a first-place finish in their respective divisions were Cade Smith in the Rookie Division (54-of-100 targets), Gus Armstrong in the Intermediate-Entry Division (90-of-100), and Anthony Felix in the Junior Varsity Division (89-of-100).

Also reaching the podium in the Intermediate-Entry Division were Parker Gill (74-of-100) and Dustin Wurm, who took second and third, respectively, after a shoot-off. Grayson Hardwick finished third in the Intermediate-Advanced Division (77-of-100), and Gus Doherty finished second in the Junior Varsity Division (88-of-100). Narrowly missing the podium in the JV Division was Chase Carrere, who lost in a shoot-off for third place. In the Varsity Division, Dillon Wurm came out on top of a shoot-off for a second-place finish.

In addition to the individual accolades, the club received numerous team awards.

Colusa County’s Varsity took first place in the State High 3, and their JV took first place in the State High 3 as well as the Series High 3. The club as a whole placed first in Series High 3 and second in State High 3.

The Ducks’ varsity squad – composed of Dillan Wurm, Devin Wurm, and Caleb Camara – took second place at the State Shoot, as did their Intermediate-Advanced squad (Elle Farris, Thomas Casillas, Grayson Hardwick). Their Junior Varsity squad (Anthony Felix, Gus Doherty, Chase Carrere) took first, as did their Intermediate-Entry squad (Gus Armstrong, Parker Gill, Dustin Wurm).

With the sporting clays season now over, the Ducks will return to action in early spring for the start of trap season.

Prior to that, the Ducks will hold their third annual introductory shoot on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 AM to 3 PM, at the club’s home shooting range in the Colusa Industrial Park. Michael Ziglar, a Colusa County Youth Shooting Sports team member and a Colusa High School student, is putting the introductory shoot on as his senior project.

Signs are posted at the Colusa Industrial park for directions. The event is an opportunity for interested parents and kids to come out and learn more about shooting sports and to get to know the Colusa County Youth Shooting Sports coaches, team members, and parents. A barbecue lunch will be provided. For more information, contact Michael at (530) 632-0024.■
