NEWSPAPER PUBLISHED WEEKLY ON WEDNESDAY - WEBSITE UPDATED THURSDAY

Colusa boys soccer goes 1-1 over the week

The Colusa RedHawks split their two Sacramento Valley League games over the course of the last week, falling to Live Oak on Dec. 11 before bouncing back with a win over Pierce on Thursday.

The RedHawks were on the road against the Lions to open the week, and fell 1-0. Live Oak scored the game’s only goal late in the second half, and Colusa was never able to boot the equalizer. Head coach Dan Kiely said that despite the loss, he felt the RedHawks played well on both offense and defense in the game. He credited all of his defenders for their strong play, as well as midfielders Ulises Galvan and Edgar Garcia, and forward Leo Guzman. Colusa’s keepers, Diego Avila and Omar Huerta, split halves in the net. Avila had seven saves in the first half, while Huerta posted six in the second.

Colusa played host to Pierce on Thursday, and took controlled the match early on en route to a 3-1 win. Guzman netted the opening goal in the at the 36th minute, assisted by forward Victor Hernandez. Guzman doubled up in the 57th minute on another assist from Hernandez to put Colusa up 2-0. Hernandez found the back of the net himself in the 63rd minute, assisted by halfback Rodrigo Rodriguez. Pierce finally got on the board on a penalty kick by Bears forward Gerardo Alvarado in the 74th minute, but didn’t find the back of the net again.

Kiely said fullbacks Jesus Hernandez, Darien Sarabia, Saul Velez and Nicolas Lopez, midfielders Ulises Galvan, Edgar Garcia, Dominic Garcia, and Nathael Morales, and goalkeepers Avila and Huerta all had solid outings. Colusa’s defense kept the pressure off of Avila and Huerta, who posted just three saves apiece.

Colusa (2-2-1) traveled to Redding Christian (11-7-1) for a non-league game on Monday, and to Oroville (2-6-1) on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They host Los Molinos (1-8-1) in another non-league contest tomorrow.

Pierce (6-2-1) tavels to Hamilton (4-2-1) for a non-league match tomorrow. â–
