Wanted man arrested after possible kidnapping attempt

A man wanted in Colusa County on suspicion of annoying or molesting a child under 18 was arrested in Willows last week after two teenage girls thwarted their own possible kidnapping.

According to the Glenn County Sheriff’s Office, Miguel Martinez Hernandez, 42, of Orland, was arrested on July 6 on multiple charges after two girls, ages 14 and 15, reported that Hernandez pulled next to them in a red car, spoke to them in a foreign language, and tried to get them to get in his vehicle.

Officials said when the girls refused, Hernandez allegedly unbuckled his seat belt and started to get out of his car but jumped back in and sped off when he saw one of the teens call someone on her cell phone. One of the girls also used her phone to photograph the car and license plate, and then waved her hands in the air to attract the attention of passersby, according to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Office on Sunday.

Deputies located the vehicle from the photograph parked behind St. Monica’s Church, in Willows, at approximately 9 PM, and contacted Hernandez, also known as Miguel Angel Hernandez, at a nearby residence.

While Hernandez initially provided them with a false name, the deputies were able to determine his true identity.

They also discovered Hernandez has a warrant for his arrest in Colusa County for allegedly molesting a child under the age of 18.

Hernandez was taken into custody and booked into the Glenn County jail on the warrant and one misdemeanor charge of providing false identification to a peace officer.

The case involving the incident with the two girls was referred to the Glenn County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

The Glenn County Sheriff’s Office attributes the successful apprehension of the suspect and safety of the public to the quick thinking of the juveniles who used their cell phones to both deter the suspect from any further action and to identify the vehicle.
