Two killed in high-speed vehicle pursuit

A high-speed chase ended in two deaths on Thursday, Aug. 1, when the vehicle being chased crashed head-on into a big-rig truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said Jared Andrew Russell, 21, and Kelli Christine Zanon, 25, both of Yuba City, were killed while trying to flee officers in a stolen vehicle.

An off-duty Colusa Police Officer spotted the recently-reported stolen Honda Thursday morning traveling east on Highway 20 near the Colusa City Limit. The off-duty officer alerted the Colusa County Sheriff’s Office and the Colusa Police Department, and deputies were able to get behind the vehicle in an attempt to conduct a vehicle stop.

The CHP said Russell fled from the officers and the high-speed vehicle pursuit ensued around 8 AM.

Russell continued to travel eastbound on Highway 20, reportedly passing the town of Meridian at a high rate of speed.

According to the CHP, Russell was traveling at speeds over 100 miles per hour when he entered the Sutter Bypass Bridge, and in an attempt to pass a vehicle, collied head on with a 2015 Freightliner Tractor Trailer, driven by Lakhvir Singh, 57, of Bakersfield.

The CHP said Russell and Zanon sustained fatal injuries as a result collision.

Singh was not injured, the CHP said. ■
