The city agreed to lease the lab, built when the sewer plant was upgraded in 2008, to Colusa Certified, who will use it to test commercial cannabis for things like THC level, pests, pesticides, and heavy metals and toxins created by mold, as required by state law.
Colusa City Manger Jesse Cain said it would likely be 10 months before the company has the lab up and running due to the length of time it take to get through the hoops of state government.
The lab was last rented to a Jackson-based medical group that defaulted on their lease payments, leaving the 800-square-foot facility vacant the last four years.
According to state data, there are thousands of licensed cannabis cultivators, processors, and product manufacturers in California but only 52 licensed laboratories, making the demand for testing facilities high.
The Colusa City Council was unanimous in approving the lease, which is expected to boost city coffers substantially once the lab is up and running.
“Instead of a monthly lease, like we did last time, this is a per sample charge that the city will be receiving,” Cain said. “I believe this will be a good use of our lab and bring in extra revenues to the city.”
Colusa Certified will pay the city $10 per sample tested at the facility and will pay their “fair share” of utility costs, officials said. ■
