Williams loses newest school board member

Home Government Williams loses newest school board member
The Williams Unified School District Board of Trustees has set 4 PM on Nov. 27 as the deadline for residents to submit an application to serve on the school board.

The board seeks to find a replacement for Maryah Stoots, who resigned Oct. 30 after just five months on the governing board.

In her resignation letter, Stoots said she could not commit to the required responsibilities of being a school board member, which would directly interfere with her work and family obligations. She recently resigned from Citizens from Better Williams for similar reasons.

Stoots has been an active member in the Parent Teacher Organization, and said she felt she could make a bigger impact for her children’s educational experience as a member of the community.

Stoots replaced Trustee Rosa Orozco-Lopez, who resigned earlier this year after being convicted of voter fraud.

The school board approved the timeline for appointing Stoots’ replacement at a special meeting on Nov. 12.

“We have up to 60 days so it will be in December,” said Superintendent Edgar Lampkin. “The reason we had the special meeting is to give us the opportunity to start the posting, and start letting the community know so we have people apply.”

Trustees George Simons and Leon-Vera will serve as the subcommittee responsible for reviewing the applications for qualifications.

School board members are required to be at least 18 years old, and must live and be registered to vote within the school district boundaries.

Applications are available at the district office and at each school site, officials said.

The board will interview candidates and appoint a new member at their regular meeting in December, which could be moved up due to the Christmas holidays. ■
