Colusa City Councilman Josh Hill was selected by his peers with a unanimous vote to serve as Colusa’s mayor over the next year.
The reorganization, which is done each December, places Hill at the helm after just 19 months on the dais.
“We’re going for new blood,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Tom Reische, who nominated the 27-year-old to be the elected head of the city.
Hill was appointed to the city council in April 2018 to fill the vacancy left by the unexpected death of Kirk Kelleher three months earlier. Hill secured his seat for four more years as the top vote getter in the general election the following November.
“I’m very excited to be mayor,” Hill said. “It’s something I’ve been thinking I wanted to do for awhile. I’m excited to work with the staff and just want to say thanks to Greg (Ponciano) for being a good role model.”
Tom Reische, who has been on the City Council since 2002, including several stints as mayor, was selected to remain the Mayor Pro Tem in 2020, as someone with experience to help back up Hill when needed.
Before turning over his gavel, outgoing Mayor Ponciano said it has been a pleasure to sit in the center position on the dais most of his seven years on the council.
“I take this position very serious and try not to take myself all that serious, but being able to sit in this seat in the town you were born and raised in means a lot to me,” Ponciano said.
Ponciano said that one of the things he learned while serving as mayor is just how strong a staff the city has. ■
