With its colorful float carrying local residents costumed as Scrooge, Tiny Tim, and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, Indivisible Colusa County scored the first place win, which came with a cash award.
“We entered for fun, not money,” said Indivisible Colusa member Linda Masuhara, “So when Citizens for a Better Williams awarded us the $300 cash prize, we immediately decided to donate it to another local group.”
They chose Karen’s House, which honors the late Karen Garcia, whose murder last January stunned area residents. Her ex-boyfriend, Salvador Garcia, Jr., is wanted for her death but remains at large.
“The community is still heartbroken over Karen’s death,” said Indivisible Colusa member Barbara Mayberry. “We’re grateful to the Karen’s House team for taking action to stop violence against women in Colusa County.”
Indivisible Colusa County is an all-volunteer group that encourages voting and civic engagement and puts pressure on elected representatives to support progressive policies like affordable healthcare for all. There are more than 5,000 Indivisible groups nationwide.
Indivisible Colusa members plan to participate in the third annual Women’s March on Jan. 19, in Sacramento. The first Women’s March took place in hundreds of cities across the country on the day after President Trump’s inauguration in 2017, and is estimated to be the largest single-day protest in U.S. history. Since then, the Women’s March has become a global movement focused on achieving equality for and stopping violence against women.
“We’d love to have more Colusa County residents walk with us,” Masuhara said. “The march is led by women, but everyone is welcome to participate.”
The Sacramento Women’s March starts at Southside Park at 10 AM on Saturday, Jan. 19 and ends at the State Capitol Building. To join a carpool from Colusa County to Sacramento or to meet up with Indivisible Colusa members at the park, send an email to email@example.com or call (530) 454-5056.
