Maxwell FFA hosts Ag Day

Horses, pigs, rabbits, sheep, welding stations, and so much more filled the yards at Maxwell Elementary last Thursday, as Maxwell FFA members and advisors held their annual Ag Day for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

“The entire event from start to finish went very smooth. The FFA students did a great job organizing and presenting the material,” said Maxwell Ag Advisor, Scott Stephens.

With 12 different stations available, kids learned about floral arrangements by creating their own small design with the help of Rosa Gonzalez and Laisha Izquierdo.

Jilliann and Natalie Wilson taught the students about dairy cows and supplied each student with a cup of ice cream. For livestock education, kids had several animals to choose from. Hollie Azevedo and Ashley Cain taught students about the different parts of sheep and the difference between a bummer lamb and one raised by the mom. Information on cattle dogs was presented by Courtney Wycoff, and a walk-thru trailer with sows and hogs was a hit presentation by Morgan Dennis and Paige Vierra.

“I loved seeing all the different agriculture presentations, especially the stations where we got to interact with the animals and making flower arrangements,” said Maxwell student Taylor Kirby.

Students spent around 10 minutes at each station and even had the chance to win candy for correct answers at some of the presentations.

“I love this day and the kids really enjoy themselves,” said Junior High teacher John Patterson.

The two-hour event allowed FFA members, new and seasoned, to show off their hard work in the organization and the knowledge they gained from their agriculture studies and Supervised Agriculture Experiences.

“On the average, students put in an hour or two making their posters and presentations,” Stephens said. “Those with animals take a bit more time. The participation is at the interest of the FFA students. The community, teacher, and parent support is truly appreciated.”
